NEW! Mary Edna's Report from the Campaign Trail

Since my last report...

I have continued to travel across the state and what a Great State and Great REALTORS we are blessed with as North Carolinians!

Winston Salem knows how to turn the members out for their annual Luau. Volunteers cooked a pig with all the trimmings and a good time was had by all. It was great to see so many familiar faces including our own NCAR past president, Sweet Teddy.

Then it was on to the Outer Banks for their evening membership meeting.  Michael Davenport did a great job addressing the recent assessment.  The members there face other issues like how to balance protection of endangered animals who are habitats currently of the beach with restrictions that could affect their business if the beach access is limited this fall during prime fishing season.

In August I visited my neighbors, the Chapel Hill BOD and had the opportunity to discuss some of the issues they are currently facing as well as their battle with the transfer tax. I complimented them on being a leader in green building long before it became the in thing to do.

After attending the Triangle MLS Strategic Planning Session in Wrightsville, I made my way to Johnston County to their membership luncheon. New members were introduced and a old Andy Griffith episode where Barney is going to be a real estate agent was played. It was a great reminder on disclosure of material facts and needless to say, very entertaining.

High Point was the next stop on August 20th at the country club. They had a great turnout. They are demonstrating giving back to the community by helping raise funds to create a park for children with disabilities similar to the one that has been built in Cary. Kudos to them!

The Neuse River Assn. held their membership meeting at the Carolina Colours Pavillion in New Bern. I saw many familiar faces there such as our current Treasurer, Tom Barton and my friend, current President Susan Venters. They truly set the example for keeping their members informed on issues that could affect their business. The speaker was the CEO of the Craven County Medical Center. It was interesting to hear  him confirm how many folks are using the emergency room as a visit to the doctor because of lack of health insurance. It was astronomical the amount that is written off by  hospitals because of no insurance.

This week I attended the membership meeting in Greensboro. Always one of my favorite places, especially during  the ACC tournament, it was a pleasure to hear of new possibilities for that area. Speakers were on hand to discuss the need to pass local bond referendums so that they can build new swim and recreation facilities, greenways, and roads. A special surprise was the attendance of US Representative Howard Coble, a long time friend to our industry.

Next, I am off to the Chapel Hill membership meeting and the Durham BOD and membership meeting.
